Manathakkali Vatha Kuzhambu, Manathakkali Vatha Kulambu, manathakkali kuzhambu or Chettinad style manathakkali vatha kulambu is easy kuzhambu recipe with manathakkali vatha ie Dried Black Nightshade or Makoy as known in hindi. My colleague gave me this Organic Manathakkali Vathal to try and I was more than happy to get hold of manathakkali vatha :) Manathakkali kulambu is delicious it's spicy, tangy, bitter with slight hint of sweet due to jaggery.

Manathakkali keerai or greens poriyal is always very famous but I hardly get manathakkali keerai here so when I got the vatha I was so happy and made this vatha kuzhambu for myself and brother as DH is total no-no for any kuzhambu :( The wonderful manathakkali which taste slightly bitter with tangyness of kulambu makes this dish wonderful.

I made simple lunch of manathakkali vatha kuzhambu, used home made sago papad and made both rice and kodo millet (varagu arisi sadam), a great satisfying meal it was. In the pictures you see is varagu sadam that is cooked kodo millet and not regular rice :)  You can check millets recipes here.

I am big fan of vatha kulambu, like I have already posted the Brahmin style Vatha Kuzhambu with mixed vatha (love this one too) and I always keep quite good stock of sundakkai vathal(turkey berry) too. Try this manathakkali kuzhambu and tell me how you like it.

Prep Time: Cook Time: Total Time:
Serves:3

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 Cup - Manathakkali Vatha
  • 1 tbsp - Tamarind, packed
  • 10 - Shallots or 1 Medium Onion
  • 1 tbsp - Sambar Powder
  • 1 tbsp - Oil (Sesame Oil preferred)
  • A Pinch - Asafoetida/Hing
  • 1 tsp - Mustard Seeds
  • 7 to 8 - Curry Leaves
  • To Taste - Salt
  • 1 tsp - Jaggery

Method:

  1. Soak tamarind in 1 cup water for 10-15 mins or until required, (normally I soak until I need to add tamarind, then I extract the water and add to the curry), soak manathakkali vathal in 1/2 cup water, soak manathakkali is optional. Peel pearl onion, if you wish you can slice them I didn't, if using regular onion then peel and chop it, chop tomato and keep aside.
  2. Heat oil in a kadai or pan add hing, mustard seeds and allow to splutter. Add onion, curry leaves and saute until onion becomes golden brown. Now remove manathakkali from water if soaked and add with onion, saute for 2 mins in medium to slow flame.

  6. Add tamarind extract water plus 1 or 1/2 cup water, salt to taste, mix well, cover and bring it to good boil in medium flame. Add jaggery, now keep flame to medium to slow and simmer for 5-7 mins until gravy becomes thick, oil floats on top or the consistency you like of kulambu, off flame and allow to kuzhambu to rest for minimum of 10-15 mins before you serve.

Serve with rice along with fryums and that's makes a great meal, you can add side of poriyal (stir fry).
Notes
  • You can skip onion to make it no onion garlic version.
  • You can add 1 tsp fresh crushed garlic with onion too.
  • Soaking of manathakkali is optional but this is done in Chettinad style.
  • You can add 7-8 fenugreek seeds, since my sambar powder has fenugreek I didn't added that.
  • If you don't have sambar powder replace it with 1/2 tsp turmeric powder, 2 tsp red chili powder and 2 tsp coriander seeds powder or refer the sambar powder recipe to make your own.
  • I used freshly made sambar powder so we can call this as Arachuvitta Manathakkali Vatha Kuzhambu too :)

Delicious manathakkali vatha kulambu.
