Falahari Sama Dahi Chawal, Samvat Dahi chawal or Swang Dahi Chawal, Kuthiravali Curd Rice, Kuthiraivali Thayir Sadam, falahari dahi rice is made from sama chawal also known in English as Barnyard Millets, Kuthiravali in Tamil, Udalu in Telugu, Shyama in Bengali, Khira in Oriya, Swank in Punjabi, Kavadapullu in Malayalam, Oodalu in Kannada plus other names for Samwat chawal are bhagar, varai chawal, vari chawal,saanwa, saunfiya, samkiye, swang, samvat.


I was thinking what to do something simple with swang or barnyard millet for Navratri vrat/upvaas and decided to try peanut rice with it inspired from South Indian style Curd Rice and this during last year Navratri fasting and since today is Maha Shivaratri I thought of sharing this simple vrat recipe today.

I know I am suppose to keep the Millet Friday going and should have posted this recipe on Friday but being Shivaratri and for all those people keeping fast today it will be useful as this is very quick recipe we really don't have to do much other than cooking the millet or sama chawal.

Whether you are fasting or not, if you want to include the healthy millets in your diet then sure try this recipe, and while not fasting you can add regular salt.   Know more about millets benefits here.

Samvat Dahi Chawal | Kuthiravali Curd Rice Recipe

Vegan, gluten-free curd rice with barnyard millet, perfect for fasting or vrat.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Cup - Sama/Barnyard Millet/Kuthiravali
  • 3 Cups - Water/Pani
  • 1/2 tsp - Sendha Namak or Salt
  • 3 Cups - Fresh Yogurt/Curd
  • 1/4 Cup - Grated Carrot
  • 1 - Chopped Green Chili
  • 1 tbsp - Chopped Coriander Leaves
  • 1/2 tsp - Sendha Namak or Salt

Method:

  1. Wash and soak sama/barnyard millet until needed. Heat water in a pan and bring to it boil, once water starts to boil, add sendha namak/rock salt and sama rice, cover and cook until sama gets fully cooked. You can also cook samvat in pressure cook just like how we cook normal rice, use 2 cups or 2 1/2 water, since we are maing curd rice we are adding more water so get the millet cooked very well and mashed.

  3. Beat curd in a bowl well to remove any lumps, add sendha namake (rock salt), green chili, carrot, coriander leaves and mix well.
  4. Once cooked rice gets cool add to curd mixture and stir well to combine.

Serve with banana or potato stir fry or enjoy the curd rice just like that.

Notes
  • If you wish you can do a tempering with heat 2 tsp oil add cumin seeds, peanuts or cashewnuts, curry leaves, broken red chili and pour over curd rice.
  • If you are not making for fasting then you can add regular rice and add 1/2 tsp mustard seeds, 1/2 tsp urad dal in tempering.
  • You can also add pomegranate seeds to that extra crunch.
